Mark Cheyne - Ballet Composer
Mark Cheyne has scored two full-length narrative ballets for leading companies with full orchestra: The Gold Rhino of Mapungubwe (Mzansi Ballet), where he served as principal composer and music arranger, and Charlie and the Chocolate Factory (Joburg Ballet), for which he composed an original score. His work on Charlie and the Chocolate Factory was honoured at the 20th Annual Naledi Theatre Awards (2025), where he received a Special Award for Achievement in Theatre.
“Mark is, in very simple words, a musical genius from another time. His creative spark and wit are something to be celebrated and shared, with the same generosity that his music exudes. I have had the privilege of working with him on the world premiere of my ballet Charlie and the Chocolate Factory by Roald Dahl and he has created not just a score for it, but a real masterpiece that now proudly claims its place among the other great scores of the ballet repertoire.” Mario Gaglione, Choreographer
“Our collaboration on this project was one of the most creatively rewarding experiences I’ve had, and Mark was central to bringing the vision of the ballet to life. I cannot recommend Mark Cheyne highly enough. He is a remarkable composer, a generous collaborator, and someone I would work with again in a heartbeat.” Angela Revie, Choreographer, Mzansi Ballet
“We could speak in the language of ballet - describing mood, movement, or timing - and he would immediately grasp what we wanted and how long we needed it. This intuitive understanding made the creative process seamless and rewarding. I can recommend Mark Cheyne without reservation as a composer, music producer, and musical director. He is a rare talent, and I look forward to the opportunity to collaborate with him again in the near future.” Dirk Badenhorst, Director, Mzansi Ballet
"I hold Mark in the highest regard and recommend him unreservedly for any future opportunities that may come his way. His artistry, work ethic, and dedication to excellence would be an asset to any production or institution.” Elroy Fillis-Bell, Chief Executive Officer, Joburg Ballet
